Your Go-To Summer Wines as Recommended by Our Wine Experts

Ready to upgrade your summer sipping with a little sophistication?

Warm-weather wine season is officially in session (finally). Cue the patio playlist, al fresco lunches that somehow always seem to spiral into dinners (because, why not?), and yes: proper summer wines to match.

Fancy sipping solo in the sunshine or showing off at dinner parties? Or do you need a bottle that says โ€œI know my stuffโ€ without actually saying it? No problem. We’ve got you.

For your benefit, we raided the Hackstons cellar (not quite literally, but you understand the sentiment), badgered our retail team, and came up with nine top-tier bottles (if we say so ourselves) that are the holy trinity of summer drinking.

Whites, rosรฉs or reds, you’ll find delicious discoveries and fancy flexes that may even be too good to share.

Let’s dive in, shall we?

White wines that don’t do โ€œboringโ€

How would we describe the below recommendations? Crisp, textured, and honestly, cooler than a summer breeze on a rooftop terrace.

Iconic Riesling: Grosset Polish Hill Riesling, Clare Valley 2023

This standout Riesling is dry, precise, and if weโ€™re being honest? Seriously addictive.

Letโ€™s park the โ€œsweetโ€ stereotype for now. This oneโ€™s electric. Zesty lime juice, crisp green apple, juicy pear and a dash of orange blossom, all tied together with that signature Grosset minerality. Think chalky, refined, and (impossibly) elegant. Itโ€™s bone dry, but layered and textural, with a delicacy that keeps you coming back sip after sip.

Grosset, Polish Hill Riesling, Clare Valley

Polish Hill Riesling, Grosset, Clare Valley, 2023

ยฃ49.95

This bottle is pure Clare Valley confidence. A masterclass in balance, tension, and terroir. Picture pairing it with sushi, citrus dishes, or a sun-drenched park picnic with someone who appreciates a bit of wine nerdery (as much as we do).

Side note: Just so you know, Grosset doesnโ€™t do mass market. These are small-batch, tightly allocated, and screwcapped for freshness. So yes, now youโ€™re in the know. No need to thank us.

About the producer: the Aussie icon with a global benchmark

From Clare Valley’s wild, rugged hills 80 miles north of Adelaide, Jeffrey Grosset so happens to provide some of the finest Rieslings on the planet. It’s organic, uncompromising and understatedly iconic. Essentially it’s Australian wine that’s looking to give European Riesling a run for it’s money.

Our team says…

“Bright, complex, it’s just as good now as it will be in a few years.”

The alpine overachiever: Rudi Pichler, Wรถsendorfer Kollmรผtz Grรผner Veltliner Smaragad, Wachau, 2023

The secret’s out: Grรผner is the thinking person’s white Burgundy.

Enter Austriaโ€™s answer to Burgundy royalty. This Grรผner brings orchard fruit, white pepper, and serious minerality.

As for the perfect pairings? This gem is just right to be served with grilled prawns and herby chicken.

The vibe? It’s impressive without being a show-off. Think of that one friend who always looks effortlessly cool. This is the wine equivalent.

About the producer: Austriaโ€™s exotic wine specialist

Rudi Pichler is the name to know if youโ€™re dabbling in Austrian whites or if you want a Grรผner Veltliner that comes all guns blazing. Based in the Wachau valley (think: fairy-tale vineyards and seriously steep slopes), Rudi is known for precision, minerality, and wines so pure they practically hum. Imagine citrus, white pepper, and a finish so long it deserves its own postcode.

Our team says…

โ€œThis Grรผnerโ€™s fresh, sharp, and really easy to drink. Great on its own or with something light.โ€

Burgundy royalty, bottled: Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Leflaive 2014

White Burgundy, but make it truly special; the Puligny-Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive is like the wine love child of complexity and grace. Rich yet taut, itโ€™s a winning combination.

The tasting notes? Think citrus (thanks to the lemon curd), toast, hazelnut and a smidge of white truffle (yum), all brought together by a stony minerality and a hint of oak. This is old-school elegance with new-age swagger, and we’re here for it.

We reckon itโ€™s best enjoyed with lobster, turbot or simply just savoured solo.

About the producer: Burgundy at its best

Letโ€™s not mess about: Leflaive is top-tier, no-notes, first-class winemaking. This is the kind of Puligny-Montrachet that sommeliers dream about and collectors hoard. Itโ€™s precision, power, and purity in a bottle; and if you want our opinion, it doesnโ€™t just age well; it gets even better. Consider this your golden ticket to white Burgundyโ€™s A-list.

Our team says…

โ€œYou taste the Leflaive 2014 and it all makes sense. Itโ€™s got this quiet precision and depth that just stands out.โ€

Rosรฉ that talks back

We know youโ€™re too modest to say so yourself, but youโ€™re way too interesting for sub-par blush. And we have just the right curation for you.

Pale pink fizz that packs a punch: Champagne Drappier Rosรฉ de Saignรฉe Brut

What makes this so special? For starters, itโ€™s made the rare saignรฉe way. Meaning? Well, itโ€™s got more flavour, more body. Basically, more oomph to it. So, Champagne lovers will enjoy this intensely expressive bottle of fizz.

Picture enjoying a generous and textured palate, perfectly balanced by a zesty freshness and subtle hints of spice. Weโ€™re talking vivid aromas of wild strawberry and blood orange, with a whisper of spices.

Weโ€™re talking Champagne with real depth here; a bottle thatโ€™s perfect for summer garden parties, served with tuna tartare, charcuterie (who could resist?) or grilled Mediterranean vegetables.

This is a rosรฉ that means business. Perfect for celebrations, picnics, promotionsโ€ฆ proposals. Itโ€™s truly ready for it all.

About the producer: the artisans of bubbly

Family-owned Drappier has been championing sustainable, terroir-driven Champagne since 1808, crafting wines full of character and depth. Their Rosรฉ de Saignรฉe uses a rare method that traps intense flavours of wild strawberry and blood orange, balanced by a zesty, refreshing finish.

Our team says…

โ€œThis oneโ€™s got that proper old-school charm but still feels fresh. Loads of juicy red fruit, a bit wild, a bit elegant. Classic Drappier doing what they do best.โ€

A coastal classic: Domaine Ott Clos Mireille Rosรฉ Magnum 2023

Doing the basic maths: Magnum means more rosรฉ, which means a better party. This magnum is a fancy rosรฉ that is the epitome of the Mediterranean.

Expect pale colour, and notes of white peach, citrus peel and delicate florals combined with a fine mineral backbone. As for the saline edge, it beautifully hints at its coastal origins.

Built for alfresco entertaining, this is the Provence rosรฉ that you’ll want in your glass. Serve it with Niรงoise salad, seafood platters (to get into the shoreline spirit) or simply enjoy chilling by the pool.

About the producer: rosรฉ wine, levelled up

A Provenรงal legend since 1912, Domaine Ott is the go-to for rosรฉ thatโ€™s equal parts elegant and effortlessly cool. Their Clos Mireille magnum channels the Mediterranean vibe perfectly, think delicate white peach, zesty citrus peel, and subtle floral notes, all backed by a salty mineral streak straight from the nearby sea. Itโ€™s a big, bright, and beautifully balanced rosรฉ built for alfresco sipping and poolside glamour.

Our team says…

โ€œItโ€™s what I imagine sipping if I ever made it onto a yacht in the South of France.โ€

When only icon status will do: Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosรฉ 2011

Rich, layered and certainly not shy, this is rosรฉ Champagne at its most collectible. What makes this so special? Itโ€™s composed primarily of Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru vineyards, with a small amount of Chardonnay that adds more life to it.

Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne Rose

Notes of poached strawberries, toasted brioche and saffron pretty much make this dessert rosรฉ in a tuxedo.

Silky yet precise, itโ€™ll add a luxurious touch to birthdays, anniversaries or any other summer celebration you can think of. But even if you fancy uncorking it on any other Tuesday afternoon, we wonโ€™t judge. Youโ€™re only human.

About the producer: old money with fresh moves

Letโ€™s look back to the 1700s, shall we? Setting up its legacy in 1734, Taittinger is one of the last remaining family-owned Champagne houses, and it shows. Theyโ€™re all about finesse, elegance, and not overdoing it. Their Comtes de Champagne Rosรฉ is one of those bottles that people in-the-know actually whisper about. Seriously. Itโ€™s 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and 100% โ€œwow, this is incredibleโ€.

Our team says…

โ€œTaittinger is Champagne that makes you feel like youโ€™re doing life correctly.โ€

Last (but not least,) the redsโ€ฆ

Red wines that can handle the heat

Imagine lighter red, chillable even (yes, really) and most importantly: full-flavour attitude in a glass. For red-wine enthusiasts, this sounds like a dream, right?

Burgundy finesse, Oregon flair: Domaine Drouhin โ€˜Laurรจneโ€™ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2021

For those who are unaware: The Drouhins know their pinot, and The Laurรจne cuvรฉe 2021 happens to be their mic drop moment. Poised, vibrant and the epitome of the Domaine Drouhinโ€™s Oregon estate, itโ€™s named after Vรฉronique Drouhinโ€™s daughter (who doesnโ€™t love a fun fact?).

The 2021 has notes of juicy wild cherry, forest floor, cranberry, a little hint of spice and soft, silky tannins that scream summer red, and brings a bright acidity to the wine. The finishing touch? An aroma of subtle rose petals.

Serve it with grilled salmon, duck and mushroom dishes on summer evenings.

About the producer: lavishly lowkey

Domaine Drouhin Oregon is the American arm of Burgundyโ€™s Drouhin family. They landed in the Dundee Hills in the late โ€™80s, chasing Pinot perfection in Oregonโ€™s cool climate. Today, Vรฉronique Drouhin leads the charge, crafting polished, elegant wines that channel both Oregon character and Burgundian finesse. โ€˜Laurรจneโ€™ is their signature Pinot, named after Vรฉroniqueโ€™s daughter, and itโ€™s layered, silky and quietly powerful.

Our team says…

โ€œThis Burgundy is polished, without showing off too much.โ€

Pinot with altitude (as well as attitude): Marie-Thรฉrรจse Chappaz Grain Pinot Charrat, Valais 2021

The Alps are aliveโ€ฆ this remarkable bottle? Swiss, biodynamic and (if you ask us) borderline mythical. This high-altitude Pinot Noir is as pure as it is expressive, so hats off to Chappaz Grain for crafting Alpine freshness in a bottle.

From the first sip, youโ€™ll taste notes of red berries, mountain herbs and a hint of smoke.

The best part? It can work at a slightly cooler temperature (yes, youโ€™ve read correctly). More so, it works alongside summer truffle dishes, or if you really want to stay on theme, soft alpine cheeses.

Hint: The production is tiny, so who knows when youโ€™ll get the next chance to grab a bottle?

About the producer: the doul of the Swiss Alps

Marie is a legend. An icon. A one-woman crusade for soulful, biodynamic winemaking in the Valais region of Switzerland. Her wines arenโ€™t made, theyโ€™re composed, with the sort of care, instinct, and emotional intensity that most of us save for the group chat. Expect high-altitude freshness, mountain energy and quiet power.

Our team says…

โ€œThis wine doesnโ€™t draw too much attention to itself, and somehow says more than the loudest bottle in the room.โ€

Big name. Big wine. Bigger vibes: Clos de Tart Grand Cru Monopole 2017

Looking for a show-stopping red? Enter the Grand Cru. This legendary wine is far from all hype. Itโ€™s layered with opulence, elegance and poise (regardless of its powerful punch). Starting its life from the historic monopole in the Cรดte de Nuits, enjoy your moment of savouring something so iconic in your glass.

Expect your taste buds to savour the deep, layered and velvety complexity combined with a rich, textured palate. The tasting notes? Dark cherry, rose petals and sweet spices.

The serving suggestions? We think this red deserves to be reserved for those special summer fine-dining occasions. Try it with pigeon, lamb or aged cheeses. Mouth watering already?

Our top tip: Decant it. Because itโ€™s really that kind of bottle.

About the producer: monastic drama in a bottle

Established in 1141 (yep, you read that right), Clos de Tart is one of the oldest and most exclusive Grand Crus in Burgundy, and itโ€™s got all the mystique and intensity to prove it. Weโ€™re talking about Pinot Noir with a plotline. Itโ€™s dark, brooding, layered; the kind of wine you uncork when your plans involve steak, candlelight, and maybe an existential conversation or two.

Our team says…

โ€œThis oneโ€™s got history, charm, and a bit of mystery. Itโ€™s a summer red with a story to tell.โ€

Wrapping things up: the closing chapter

Whether youโ€™re looking to us for the everyday icons, the rare gems, or the big-ticket flexes, our summer shortlist is sure to deliver.

Why? Because these are the wines that weโ€™re drinking, gifting, showing off to pals and loved ones (and yes occasionally hiding from friends).

Got any questions? Want help building your ideal summer rotation (or cellar)? All you need to do is drop us a line or feel free to drop by our Knightsbridge retail store. We truly love this stuff, so itโ€™s really no problem. Even more so, we love talking about it.

Thatโ€™s everything for now. Cheers!
