Lagavulin’s 1994 Distillers Edition takes the Islay distillery’s famously powerful, smoky character and adds a second maturation in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Distilled in 1994 and bottled in 2010 under batch code lgv.4/498, it combines around 16 years of development with the richness of sweet Spanish wine-seasoned oak. Dense peat smoke, roasted malt and sea salt sit alongside raisins, dark fruit and vanilla, with coffee, polished oak and a subtle medicinal edge building through the palate. The PX influence brings sweetness and weight, though Lagavulin’s smoke remains firmly in control, creating a balance of fruit, fire and coastal savouriness. Bottled at 43% ABV, it is rich without becoming overwhelming. Mature, smoky and deeply expressive, it’s a sought-after older edition of one of Islay’s most distinctive annual releases.
