Belguardo is Mazzei’s flagship from the coastal Maremma, showing a slightly different side to Tuscany than the more familiar inland hills. The 2013 vintage is built largely around Cabernet Sauvignon, with a little Cabernet Franc adding lift and structure. Blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry lead the way, followed by tobacco, graphite and a touch of leather that has come with time. It’s smooth and well put together, with fine tannins and a natural freshness that keeps everything in balance. It’s right where it needs to be, showing exactly why this Cru is held in such high regard.
