Yamazaki Smoky Batch The First was launched in 2023 as a limited Japanese travel-retail release, offering a smokier take on the elegant style of Japan’s oldest malt whisky distillery. Built around peated spirit matured in ex-bourbon casks, it keeps the smoke measured rather than heavy, allowing Yamazaki’s fruit and soft texture to remain at the centre. Pineapple, apricot and honey sit alongside grilled citrus, vanilla and a faint waxy note, with gentle peat smoke building gradually across the palate. Bottled at 43% ABV, it feels rounded and approachable, finishing with warm oak, embers and a lightly savoury edge. Fragrant, balanced and quietly distinctive, it’s a Japanese single malt that uses peat as an extra layer of complexity rather than letting it dominate.
