Easter’s that sweet spot on the calendar where spring’s finally kicking in, chocolate becomes a legitimate food group (no judgement here), and lamb takes centre stage on Sunday’s dinner table. The clocks have gone forward, the days are getting longer, and frankly, that four-day weekend is an absolute gift. Whether you’re in it for the food, the family time, the lie-ins, or all of the above, it’s a feel-good moment in the year.
This year, Easter lands on 20th April, which is basically right around the corner. Maybe you’re planning a full-on roast with all the trimmings. Maybe you’re heading to see family. Or maybe, just maybe, you’ve got plans to demolish a bag of Mini Eggs from your sofa in your pajamas. Whatever your vibe, we’ve got the drinks to match.
We’ve pulled together a cracking line-up of wines that’ll go down a treat with your Easter feast. From roast lamb to veggie mains to a fancy seafood starter, these bottles are made to impress (and make you look like you know your stuff).
And if you’re after something a bit different for gifting, or sipping solo once the guests have gone, we’ve included a few brilliant whiskies too. These aren’t your average bottles either. We’ve gone for independent bottlings: small-batch, full of character, and way more interesting than anything you’ll find on the supermarket shelf.
So whether you’re hosting, chilling, gifting or grazing, we’ve got just the thing to pour this Easter.
Alright, let’s dive in.
Easter’s been around for a while, like, a long while. Originally a Christian celebration marking the resurrection of Jesus, it also borrows a few vibes from older spring festivals (hello, bunnies and eggs). Basically, it’s always been about new beginnings, fresh starts, and a bit of seasonal joy. Over time, it’s turned into a full-on feast-friendly, chocolate-filled weekend with a dash of spirituality (if that’s your thing). However you celebrate it, Easter’s all about good food, good company, and soaking up the spring vibes.
Easter is the season of fresh flavours, lighter plates and the occasional panic when the oven is too full. Enter white wines. They’re crisp, zesty and ready to rise to any occasion. Starting with seafood ahead of the lamb? Or just fancy something chilled in your glass while the little ones fight over the last creme egg? Look no further.
A Sauvignon Blanc? From California’s Russian River Valley? Yep, you’ve read that correctly. Some of you might raise an eyebrow at the thought. While this region is normally reserved for Pinot and good ol’ Chardonnays, this beauty doesn’t just break the mould, but tosses it entirely out of the window. Somehow, the one-of-a-kind Merry Edwards has taken a grape that’s normally all zip and zing, barrel-fermented it (fancy, we know) and stirred it on the lees (even fancier). And what did we get? Something unexpectedly delicious.
£60
This isn’t your average glass of grassy-green Sauvignon Blanc. Think tropical vibes, Meyer lemon, pineapple, refreshing lime and a flutter of white flowers for a palate that swings from delicious stone fruit to hints of marzipan. The 2022 release is silky, bright and the Easter wildcard you never knew you needed. It’s a true oddity, and all the better because of it. But don’t just take our word for it. See for yourself.
Think you know your Sauvignon Blanc? Think again. The Ornellaia Bianco is here to strictly shake up all your expectations. Your typical grassy, sharp variety? We think not. This showstopper stems from one of Italy’s finest producers, and it’s making its debut as the first ever Sauvignon Blanc under the brand new controlled designation of origin, guaranteeing the best quality and origin of the wine. Aged in amphorae, barriques and tonneaux (with the cheeky addition of 25% new wood) this white wine has the kind of structure and depth that’s truly hard to come by. So, trust us when we say it’s the perfect companion for your roast Easter lamb!
£245
The 2021 vintage knows how to make an unforgettable entrance. On the nose, it’s a delicate combination of peach, mango, citrus zest, sage and just a hint of jasmine. But, don’t be fooled by its subtlety. The palate is rich, creamy, and bursting with honeyed stone fruits. The real star though is the mineral backbone that courses through it, leaving a delightful blend of tropical fruit, tomato leaf, and a dash of chalk.
A special occasion calls for a special wine much like this one, but whether you stash it away or crack it open, you’ll be happy either way.
White not your thing? No worries. Get ready to meet the reds that deserve some limelight. From the deep, complex layers of Rioja to the elegance of Bordeaux, these wines bring serious character to the table. Whether you’re a fan of smooth tannins, rich fruit, or a spicy kick, there’s a bottle here for every mood and occasion. So pour yourself a glass, sit back, and let these reds work their magic.
Looking for a wine that screams sophistication without making your wallet cry? In comes Viña Ardanza. This gem spends a whopping six years ageing before it hits the shelves, meaning it technically could be called a Gran Reserva, but they’re keeping it humble with a ‘Reserva’ label – talk about giving you more than you bargained for!
£34
The American oak gives it a delicious sweet spice, which pairs perfectly with those bold, rich fruits. Plus, silky tannins and mouth-watering acidity make it the ultimate match for that roast lamb you’ve been dreaming of. What’s more, expect cherries, currants, and plums before a spicy wave of pepper, licorice, and hints of vanilla to come sweeping in. Fresh and balanced now, but stash it away for a decade or two, and you’ll be sipping on pure magic.
A toast to 25 years of Seña, and what a celebration it is! This Chilean beauty, crafted by the dream team Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi, is practically the love child of Bordeaux elegance and Chilean terroir.
£115
With a deep ruby red colour and aromas of red and black fruits, fresh herbs, and a cheeky hint of coffee and pastries, this wine is as complex as your favourite soap opera. On the palate, it’s blueberry pie meets cassis cream, with fresh fruit galore and tannins so smooth they might just ask you out for a drink. This wine is a showstopper now, but if you can wait, a few more years will have it singing like a symphony.
The 2014 Vieux Château Certan is what happens when Bordeaux gets it just right. With a decade in the bottle, this wine oozes smoothness. You’ll be hit with a bouquet of black cherries, red plums, and an earthy truffle note, basically, it’s the wine equivalent of a cosy hug.
£225
Silky-smooth with fruit purity and a touch of black pepper spice, it’s got the structure to stand up to your richest meats and the elegance to pair with a fine dinner party. Don’t let this one slip away, it’s the kind of wine you’ll remember long after the last drop.
Forget the wines for a minute (don’t worry, we’ll get back to them), this month, it’s all about the real hidden treasures: independent cask bottlings of whisky. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill bottles. Indie bottlers are out there, working their cask-maturing magic, and the result? Whisky that’s the epitome of unique. No two casks are alike, and with most releases having fewer than 300 bottles, you’re getting something rare, exclusive, and as special as finding the last bottle of your favourite whisky on the shelf.
What’s even better? These whiskies tend to be cask strength, giving you a pure, unfiltered expression of the distillery’s character. And those labels? Bold, quirky, and miles away from the standard distillery designs. Pair these rare gems with fresh white wines for a spring sipping session that’ll have you toasting to the season. Cheers to rare finds, seasonal sips, and whiskies that are anything but ordinary.
Right, enough of the talk. Let’s get straight into it!
Matured for 14 years in a single refill sherry butt, this 61.1% cask strength dram is a golden delight. The nose bursts with brioche, peaches, panettone and marzipan. The palate follows up with honey, crème pâtissière, yellow flowers and a flapjack-ish, cakey finish.
£80
A bright and patisserie-rich dram that shows just how elegant Glentauchers can be. If you’ve got a sweet tooth and love a dessert-forward profile with plenty of depth, then look no further.
Distilled in April 2005, this 18 Year Old spent its life in a refill sherry hogshead before bottling in March 2024. It’s The Macallan magic at 58.1%. Expect baked apple, stewed fruits and milk chocolate on the nose, followed by toffee, sultanas, and zingy orange peel. The finish is all morello cherry and toasted oak.
£235
The Macallan fans will appreciate the balance of mature sherry influence without over-oaking. It’s the kind of dram that rewards a slow sip and pairs beautifully with a quiet evening or a rich dessert.
This expression from our own ‘The Bottling Club‘ range is finished for two years in a 1st fill Moscatel sherry octave, this little cask worked overtime to crank the intensity to eleven. It’s all raisin fudge, brandy pudding, cinnamon toast and smoked ham on the nose. On the palate, it’s figgy, chocolatey, leathery joy with a brooding, ginger-tobacco finish.
£85
Dailuaine’s weighty spirit takes well to sherry, and this small cask has given it a turbo boost of dark richness. If you love bold, punchy, decadent drams, you’re looking at your next favourite.
Distilled in 1995 and matured for 25 years in a first-fill rum hogshead, this whisky inspired a whole bottling series. Expect a tropical, smoky, salted caramel bombshell wrapped in one of the most beautiful bottles you’ll ever see.
£3,000
Ghost Cat by name, ghost dram by nature – blink and it’s gone such is the popularity of this expression. Springbank’s reputation precedes it, and this one lives up to the hype. The rum cask adds something truly special to an already legendary spirit.
Distilled in 1968 and finished for 20 months in an Amoroso sherry cask, this whisky is a masterpiece. A rich amber glow, followed by a nose full of fruitcake, floral notes, hazelnuts and spice. The palate is a flavour carnival of ripe fruit, sticky toffee, caramelised apples and warming herbs.
£6,600
The finish? Long. Luxurious. Legendary. This is a once-in-a-lifetime dram that showcases the beauty of long-aged Speyside whisky with finesse and flair. Only 582 bottles were made. So, once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.
So, whether you’re carving lamb, devouring hot cross buns, or simply hunting for something better than another chocolate egg, our wine and whisky Easter gift guide has you covered. From feast-ready wines to standout indie whiskies, there’s no excuse not to raise a cracking glass this Easter.
