This is Islay, but not as you know it. Distilled at Bunnahabhain in April 1978 and bottled in 2008, this 30-year-old single cask was released under the “Coilltean” label by Samaroli, Italy’s most revered independent bottler, known for selecting casks with character, complexity, and charm. Matured in a sherry butt and bottled at 45% ABV, it’s a rare opportunity to experience a long-aged, unpeated Islay whisky through the lens of one of the most meticulous bottlers in the game.Only 783 bottles were drawn from this single cask, each individually numbered and offering a distinctly different take on Islay’s typically smoky reputation. Here, the focus is elegance over impact, with layers of fruit, spice, and oak, shaped by time, and softened by sherry wood. It’s Bunnahabhain at its most contemplative.
Nose - Dried figs and raisins wrapped in soft leather and toasted nuts. A hint of coastal smoke drifts in, more suggestion than statement.
Palate - Oily and mouthcoating, with notes of vanilla fudge, meaty richness, dried peaches and oak-soaked honey. Add a dusting of warm spice and you’ve got a dram that lingers like good conversation.
Finish - Long and lingering. One for the purists, the patient, and those who appreciate subtlety over smoke.
