Heads up: The (peat) eagle has landed! Ardbeg Hypernova isn’t just peated whisky to pour into your glass; we’re talking bonfire-in-a-glass levels of intensity (no, really).
Let’s set the scene: picture a wild dram from the wild island of Islay, and the smokiest Ardbeg to date. Yep, Ardbeg is well known for peat, but trust us when we say that Hypernova takes peatiness to a whole new dimension.
And we must say, it’s perfect timing. Ardbeg Day is on the 31st of May, Islay’s 2025 Fèis Ìle festival is in full swing, and smoky whisky is having a serious moment (all thanks to its growing scarcity, might we add).
So keep scrolling as we spill all you need to know about our latest Liquid Legacy in this blog.
Are you the kind of person who thinks a dram isn’t worth sipping unless it brings the smoke? If the answer is “yes”, then Ardbeg should be firmly on your radar. Founded in 1815, Ardbeg has given us over 200 years of pure (smoky) magic.
Situated on the windswept, sea-sprayed southeast coast of the Hebridean Isle of Islay, this iconic distillery has undoubtedly caused a stir as the punk rocker of the whisky world, and gained something of a loyal cult following because of it.
When it comes to their whiskies, it’s almost as if the Atlantic breeze rolls straight into your whisky glass.
So what exactly makes the Ardbeg Hypernova so… hyper?
We don’t want to go full mad scientist on you, so we’ll explain this simply. Peated whiskies get their smoky flavour from a compound called phenol, which is released when peat is burned during the malting process. The more phenolic parts per million (PPM), the smokier the whisky. Basically, the higher the PPM, the more your dram smells like it spent its youth hanging out in smokehouses and barbecue pits.
Most peated whiskies sit at about 30–50 PPM. But not Ardbeg. Hypernova’s barley is smoked to a jaw-dropping 170 PPM. Not only that; for those who enjoy a stronger sip, it’s bottled at a punchy 51% ABV. Just imagine the power, boldness and body that’s heading for your glass!
Packed with so much flavour, it’s made to be provocative. Smooth? Not really. Subtle? Definitely not. This is whisky that’s made to stand out; and honestly? We’re here for it.
Time to welcome the fireworks. Released in 2022, Hypernova is, without question, Ardbeg’s boldest and most unapologetically smoky whisky yet.
On the nose, you’re hit with massive waves of tar, campfire smoke, sea salt, and a sort of ‘barnyard’ aroma in the background. You’ll also catch restrained hints of fruitiness, blackcurrants, and a burst of peppermint thrown into the mix. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find the complexity of singed lavender, notes of dark chocolate, bitter almonds, and aniseed spice. Talk about an evolving finish!
Now, onto the palate. Expect an oily, chewy texture that clings to your tongue, but in the best way possible. The first wave hits hard with full-throttle peat smoke. The mid-palate throws a delightful curveball with its combo of minty coolness, spiced cocoa, and a salty-sweet nuttiness that draws you in.
The finish? Exceptionally long, smoky, peppery and ever so slightly herbal, a true flavour journey.
Pungent, powerful and perfect for anyone who likes their whisky wild, rich and a little untamed (just like Islay), this is intensity, but turned up to 11.
So, every May, Islay bursts into life with Fèis Ìle (a week-long celebration of whisky, music, and coastal charm). One of the biggest highlights? As mentioned before, the festival wraps up with Ardbeg Day on 31st May, complete with global tastings, parties, and the occasional bagpiper. This year, there’s no better bottle to mark the occasion than Ardbeg Hypernova; a smoky showstopper that’s practically made for toasting the island’s wild spirit.

Grab a bottle of Ardbeg Hypernova if…
Simply put, we reckon a peated whisky this powerful deserves something equally as bold. Pair it with delicate flavours and they’ll definitely get bulldozed.
Try it with blue cheese, smoked dishes, or even dark chocolate truffles. Want to make the most of the warm weather? A BBQ platter works perfectly. Even better? A decadent garlic butter steak that’s smoky, rich and indulgent.
We know we said we wouldn’t go all mad scientist on you, but Ardbeg definitely will. Over the years, they’ve built a reputation for pushing boundaries and never shying away from ruffling a few traditional feathers.
They already have a string of legendary creations under their belt, many of which have achieved serious cult status. But Ardbeg doesn’t sit still. With every new release, they prove that “unpredictable” is just part of their creative process.
Back to their latest smoky spectacle, Hypernova. Why? Because it proves they haven’t just held onto their edge; they’ve sharpened it. Unlike some distilleries that perhaps mellow over time, Ardbeg keeps going bolder, wilder, and weirder (in the best possible way). With Ardbeg, enough is never enough.
Say hello to tradition… with a wild side.
Ardbeg Hypernova isn’t just a whisky. It’s a full-on smoke show! Bold, bonkers, yet utterly brilliant, it’s the perfect bottle to grab at Hackstons Knightsbridge, or buy it online this Ardbeg Day, Father’s Day… or just because.
Cheers. Let the fun begin!
