Flaccianello della Pieve is Fontodi’s flagship wine and one of Tuscany’s most celebrated pure expressions of Sangiovese. The fruit comes from the estate’s best high-lying parcels around Panzano in Chianti, where the vines grow on the region’s fractured galestro soils and are farmed organically. The 2020 was fermented in stainless steel before spending 18 months in French oak barriques, around 30% new, followed by a further six months in larger oak casks. Dark cherry, plum and wild berries sit alongside violet, liquorice, spice and crushed stone, with fine, supple tannins and bright acidity giving the wine excellent balance. Bottled at 14.5% ABV, it is concentrated but never heavy, with the magnum format supporting particularly slow, graceful development. Serve at 16–18°C after one to two hours in a decanter, with roast beef, lamb, game or mature Pecorino.
