Ardnahoe’s inaugural 5-year-old offers an early look at a distillery with a slightly heavier, more traditional character already taking shape. Set up by Hunter Laing in 2018, it brings together peat smoke and a coastal edge with a touch of underlying sweetness from its mix of ex-bourbon and oloroso casks. Expect to find smoke, citrus and gentle spice, with a slightly oily texture that gives it more weight than you might expect at this age. It doesn’t feel overworked or overly shaped at this stage, which is part of the appeal. More than anything, it feels like the start of something worth keeping an eye on as the distillery continues to find its footing.
