Pieropan’s La Rocca is one of Soave’s benchmark white wines, made entirely from Garganega grown on the limestone and clay slopes of Monte Rocchetta beneath the medieval castle of Soave. The vineyard’s south-westerly exposure and late harvest give the fruit unusual ripeness, while fermentation and around 12 to 15 months on the fine lees in French and Slavonian oak build texture and depth. The 2021 vintage was low-yielding but excellent in quality, producing a wine that feels generous without losing its freshness. Yellow peach, apricot and exotic fruit sit alongside almond, honey, saffron, ginger and white pepper, with a fine mineral line carrying the finish. Rich, elegant and quietly powerful, it shows just how serious and age-worthy Garganega can be, particularly alongside richer fish, poultry or creamy risotto.
